As part of the inquiry based learning, students tuned into the Measurement topic by a hands on activity. There were instruments related to measurement kept in class for this purpose. Students were divided into groups and they had to identify the purpose of a particular instrument and usage. They had a fun time measuring objects using physical balance, surprised to find the weight of their identity card on a spring balance, measuring jar etc. In the next activity students were given few objects like dal, pulses, face cream, liquid soap, fruits, powder etc. They had to categorize it correctly as per their measurement criteria, which the students were able to do it accurately. They started with learning measuring length, how to draw a straight line using a ruler to the correct measure, addition and subtraction of length. SCIENCEScience is a way of thinking much more that it is a body of knowledge” - with this great belief, the students observed and experienced the dispersal of light and making of a rainbow by using prism and Newton disk. They developed a concept map to identify what rainbows are, how they form, and under what conditions they are visible. They also learned that wind is air in motion and experienced the same through experiment. Besides this they discussed how can keep their surroundings and house clean. They enhanced their knowledge by learning about natural and man-made fibres. SOCIAL SCIENCETo build up their sensitivity towards the environment and how we can save it from degradation and pollution, students were introduced to the topic – Pollution, its meaning and types- relating it to the holidays that were declared in the month of November because of pollution and why the students were not allowed outdoor games for few days and also couldn’t celebrate Children’s Day in the school. Students enhanced their knowledge about different types of pollution, its causes, effects and measures to prevent them by carrying out research work and presenting the same in the class. Students were introduced to the meaning and importance of Festivals and different types of festivals celebrated in India i.e. Religious festivals, Harvest festivals, National festivals. They also observed and commented on the pattern formed by caterpillar and a fish when they move. LIFE SKILLSStudents made a booklet “Inside-out” and illustrated the same in a creative manner ‘Turn me upside down’. They learnt different strategies to divert their attention to lift their mood. Distraction is a surprisingly effective technique for changing our mood. When we realize that we have become upset, we shall choose to interrupt our negative mood by engaging in something that distracts us from what has upset us. As part of the Math Science and Visual art integration week, students understood that the subjects are not stand-alone, but transdisciplinary. A whole lot of activities were planned and the students participated with enthusiasm. The students of Grade 3 had their first Parent walk-in which was showcased as an exhibition based on the subject integration week, where the confident communicators shared their learning in these three subjects. They also revised for their UT2 and attempted the assessment with gusto. Science“The good thing about science is that it's true whether or not you believe in it.” With this great belief, the students experimented in several Science projects based on water. Implementing this in their project they prepared ‘self-watering Terrariums’ and noted their observations. They learnt about water buoyancy and experimented floating and sinking objects in water. In their daily class routine, they kept a record of sunny, cloudy, rainy, and snowy days in their notebooks. During the Science, Math and Art Integration week, they enjoyed observing the flow of water from one beaker to another in science lab (colour chromatography), optical inversion of image in water. In the topic ‘Light’ they learned to identify different sources of light, luminous and non-luminous objects and shadow formation. Social ScienceStudents learnt about the importance of transport and different means of transport through a comparison between the modes of transport used by ‘Early Humans’ Vs ‘Humans of Today’. The evolution of transport was shared as a timeline with students which gave them an insight of how the transport system has evolved over the years. Students’ prior knowledge was assessed on their understanding of the difference between land, air and water transport using probing and engaging questions. Students learnt about the use/role of transport to facilitate trade and communication along the ‘Silk Route’ through a video. Students tried to read and comprehend an aeroplane & train ticket. The topic ‘Means of communication’ was introduced in the class by asking students to list ways by which they can connect and communicate with their friends living far away. Students learnt to identify and differentiate between the different means of communication through a class discussion. They categorised sources of food (food that we obtain from plants and animals). They observed the food components and understood the importance of nutrition and balanced diet for healthy lifestyle. This helped them realise the nutrition value of each food group that we get from the market. They also placed the food items in the food pyramid to understand the nutritional value of each food item. SOCIAL SCIENCEStudents understood the importance of plants and learnt to identify the parts of the plant that are eaten as food. In continuation, they studied about the different landforms (e.g. mountains, plains, desert, plateau, island and peninsula) and the types of plants found in these different landforms. They understood the difference between weather and climate through a class discussion. In conjunction to the theme of the month ‘Food’ students started their journey of ‘Food’ from home. To understand about the food diversity in India, students were asked to bring one food item of their native state, which they shared with everyone during their lunch break. They also had informal discussion during lunch break about their food with their peers. Students were able to relate their daily life to what they were learning – from the methods of cooking, different spices used, different vessels being used for different cooking methods. They were also able to differentiate between cooked and raw food. The five food groups were discussed through a chart (fruits, vegetables, grains, dairy products and meat and egg). Their understanding of food groups was done through a collage of food groups in its respective categories. As an extension of their learning, they also learned the journey of food from ‘Farm to Plate’. ICTStudents revised the topics done till date - Introduction to Windows, Tux Paint and MS Word.
